Rutherglen gamer goes from screen to green and wins trophy

A Burnside teenager is taking the Scottish golf scene by storm, more than halving his handicap and winning an award inside two years – having been inspired by video games!

Sean Falconer, a third-year pupil at Stonelaw High, enjoyed playing golf games on his X-Box and watching on TV, but decided to try it out for real.

In two years since joining Cowglen Golf Club, the 15-year-old has reduced his handicap from 25 to nine, won all nine of his Fleming Watson League matches and a Lanarkshire Schools’ event at Hollandbush Golf Club in Lanark, and recently received the Findlay Morris Trophy, for doing so well in the league.

Sean said: “Looking forward, I hope to get my handicap down further and continue to enjoy playing golf, which I think is a fabulous game.”

“I think more kids my age should have a go.”

Sean’s dad Ian said: “Sean has a lot of natural ability, and Cowglen Golf Club have been very good to him. He has been well handled and that has played a big part in getting his handicap down.

“Sean has been glad to see how well he has done, but isn’t getting carried away by it at all.”

Proud Ian has revealed his son has aspirations of going all the way to the top, but he warned a lot of hard work lies ahead if Sean is to achieve that dream.

Ian said: “Golf is a difficult sport to learn, you need a lot of hand-eye co-ordination.

“He wants to be a pro, but he has been told that he will have to really buckle down for that.”
