Rutherglen fire not deliberate despite speculation

Police Scotland have confirmed that the fire in Muirbrae Way, Rutherglen was not deliberate.

A second-floor flat within the block went alight on April 14, causing extensive damage to the flat, loft space and roof.

Access to the building is restricted for health and safety reasons, but officers at Rutherglen Police Office say that they are satisfied there was no criminality involved.

Officers were recently seen looking at the building from a cherry picker, sparking speculation that a criminal investigation is underway.

The news comes after the Rutherglen Reformer last week reported residents’ frustration about delays in gaining access to their properties

Five families, who own the remaining flats in the block, were evacuated when the fire started and have not since been allowed back into their homes.

But this week South Lanarkshire Council, who is the factor for the building, confirmed that it would meet with residents to discuss its plans to firstly make the roof safe and secondly repair the serious damage caused.

The meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, June 25.

Ged Killen, MP for Rutherglen and Hamilton West, has been supporting the residents affected by the fire.

“My office have been in contact with the residents in Muirbrae Way and South Lanarkshire Council to try to find a way through what is a very difficult situation for all involved,” he said.

“Coping with the impact of a major incident such as this is hard enough, but the added uncertainty and not knowing when they will get access to their properties is making a stressful situation all the more difficult.

“I will continue to liaise with South Lanarkshire Council and Police Scotland and provide any support that I can to the residents affected by this.”
