Rutherglen Exchange reopens after break in

Rutherglen Exchange will be open for business as usual tomorrow following a break in in the early hours of this morning (Wednesday).

Staff arrived at the shopping centre at 7am to find it had been broken into overnight and goods stolen from a number of retailers.

The centre remained closed as police conducted an investigation.

Jane Cowan, centre manager, told the Reformer that a number of shops were targeted during the raid.

She said the incident had caused "upset and stress amongst centre personnel and retailers".

“We were saddened to discover this break-in on Wednesday morning and are shocked with the level of effort these individuals took to carry out their crime," she said.

"But we’re pleased to report that this burglary hasn’t put our shoppers off from visiting the centre and we’ve been overwhelmed with well- wishers sending kind thoughts.”

The thieves have caused thousands of pounds worth of damage to the centre, including the centre office and staff-only areas.

Early reports indicate the crime was carried out by a group of individuals with knowledge of the local area.
