Rutherglen boxing joy as Kyle McNeil makes Scottish Intermediate Championship showpiece

Rutherglen boxing club Durie’s ABC pair Lewis Connolly and Kyle McNeil competed at the Scottish Intermediate Championship over the weekend - with McNeil through to the final.

It’s the first time Durie’s ABC have had representation at the event - which this year was held at Ravenscraig - in over two years and a strong display was put up by both fighters.

Connolly was in action on Saturday against Shah Hussain of Edinburgh, but things didn’t work out as anticipated.

Hussain took the first two rounds in quick fashion before winning 4-1 by a split decision.

There was better news for McNeil, who has reached the final after a comfortable win over Ross Hutchison. McNeil’s close friend from Dumfries was cut in the first round.

Duries ABC’s boxer from Castlemilk continued to apply the pressure as he coasted to a a 5-0 unanimous decision victory.

A date, time and place for McNeil’s final is yet to be decided.

Head coach Archie Durie was left thrilled with his pair’s participation at the Ravenscraig event: “To return to the ring after two years out and to get one our boxers into a Scottish final is fantastic stuff.

“Young Kyle McNeil will now face Christopher Fleming of Kingdom ABC Borders and the whole club will be cheering Kyle on.”
