Rutherglen boxing coach says re-opening gym will end months of anguish

Rutherglen boxing coach Archie Durie says his gym opening back up on Monday will end nearly six months of torment.

The popular coach says he came quite close to losing Durie’s Boxing Gym on Cambuslang Road during the coronavirus shutdown.

And though he’s bitter about gyms being left until last to re-open, he’s just glad that he is able to do so.

“You have no idea how good it is to hear that we can re-open on Monday, it has been going on six months nearly since the gym has been open,” said Archie.

“It has been a tough six months, mentally and physically, and I thought I was going to lose the club at one point in time. It has been crazy.

“Financially, it’s the worst it has ever been in my life, and it still is. It’s still on a shaky nail, I suppose.

“It’s always a worry without this happening, but come Monday we’re opening back up and I can’t wait.

“There is a lot still to be done before then.

“I need to follow government regulations, and Boxing Scotland have their own guidelines.

“We’ve got markings for the floors and the walls, we’re measuring out for social distancing, but I’m actually worried that too many people turn up and I have to turn some away – I don’t want to do that.”

“It’s a fantastic feeling, but it’s a bitter feeling that we’re stone last to open.”
