Rutherglen boxers full of festive cheer despite gym's temporary closure

Rutherglen boxing coach Archie Durie held a socially distanced Christmas party for his young fighters, before closing his gym for three weeks.

Under Tier 4 restrictions, Durie’s Boxing Gym were dealt another sucker punch when it was announced they had to close their doors again on Boxing Day.

The popular gym will now be closed until Monday, January 18 at the very least, but Archie is remaining upbeat and wanted to end the year on a high.

He donned his Santa suit and brought some much-needed Christmas cheer to the young boxers, alongside club secretary Jacqueline Evans and coach Darren Stewart.

The Rutherglen club take the kids somewhere every year for an activity, but that hasn’t been possible with restrictions in the way.

Archie said: “Well, what can we say about 2020 except it was the year that never was!

“We are still here and we’re healthy, with every single person wishing for the same thing – a good 2021, with plenty of boxing as a whole, amateur and professional, back to some kind of normality.”
