Rutherglen and Cambuslang are to move to tier 3 coronavirus restrictions from Friday.
The move was confirmed by the First Minister this afternoon.
The region has spent the past three weeks in the fourth tier of restrictions caused by the covid-19 pandemic.
means that shops, hairdressers, gyms and other close contact services will be allowed to reopen.
Pubs will be allowed to sell food and non-alcoholic drinks until 6pm each day.
Shops will be allowed to open from 6am this Friday, with the other restrictions belng lifted as of 6pm at night.
First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said: ""I think today we should all allow ourselves a smile.
"This is a good day and a good moment."
Rutherglen MSP Clare Haughey welcomed the move, but cautioned locals that despite positive developments they still needed to be careful.
She said: “Owing to the enormous sacrifices of those living in Rutherglen and Cambuslang, we have now been able to move from Protection Level 4.
“I know how difficult these past few weeks have been – being unable to see family and friends has been tough, and, in particular, local small businesses have been sorely impacted by the restrictions to help stop the rise in Covid-19 infections.
“The measures have clearly worked, and our exit from Level 4 is down to the efforts of residents and local businesses. Thank you to all.
“However, Covid-19 levels are still higher in South Lanarkshire than many areas of Scotland, so we cannot take our eye off the ball. Difficult health protection measures remain in place, so let’s stick with it.”
