Rutherglen and Cambuslang services under threat as South Lanarkshire Council look to cut over 17 million from their budget

Up to £17.5 million could be cut from South Lanarkshire Council’s budget next year.

Options on the table include closing Halfway’s library, slashing financial support for Landemer Day, cutting back on gritting across the area during winter and removing holiday and breakfast clubs in schools.

Reducing psychological services in schools for pupils and behavioural support staff is another option, while the family services centre in Cambuslang could be moved elsewhere.

Cambuslang Disabled Club, Eastfield Club and ENABLE - Rutherglen would lose their day care travel budget entirely.

Almost 600 employees could be affected by the savings proposals due to be discussed at a specially-convened executive committee meeting today.

A report to the committee warned that protections given to education and social work in previous years “will not be a viable approach” as the council anticipates needing to make a further £83 million in cuts by 2027.

In his report, executive director for finance Paul Manning said: “Over the past four years, of total savings of £51.746m (including corporate savings), a combined total of £8.576m have come from education and social work.

“This figure represents 17 per cent of the total savings over that period.

“The effect of this has been that 75 per cent of the council’s savings over the past four years (excluding corporate savings) have come from 22 per cent of the spending budget.

“Moving forward, continuing to seek the vast majority of the council’s savings requirement from services which spend less than one quarter of the budget will not be a viable approach. In considering the savings package, it is recommended that the sustainability of this as an ongoing position, is borne in mind.”

Further savings totalling £15.5 million have been put forward for further consideration in March.
