She said: "I haven't run for over a week because I picked up a bit of muscle strain in my back, and I had a little bit of physio for it and wanted it to rest.

"So going out to do run two of week eight, another 26-minuter, and I feel really nervous because I haven't run for so long!

"It's stupid, isn't it, because I can just stop! Or I can start again! So it's stupid to feel nervous but I do."

A little while later Ruth posted again, revealing she wasn't feeling it.

"Epic fail today," she told her followers. "I just wasn’t feeling it. I said I was nervous, I just wasn't feeling it. I was really struggling, couldn't get my breathing right.

"I got to halfway and I was like, 'Oh God, I can't do it!' Pushed on a bit more, I think I stopped quite soon after that, so I don't know what I've done. 16 minutes, I don't know.

"But I failed. And I just walked. I tried to walk briskly, bit disappointed, but it's the first fail in eight weeks so I'm not going to tick this one, I might try again tomorrow or leave it a day."

While admitting to feeling "annoyed," Ruth tried to remain positive. "These things happen in life," she said. "We fail, we pick ourselves up and we try again."

Throwing support behind the television presenter, one fan wrote: "You haven’t failed Ruth. The fact you get out and have a go is an achievement in itself."

Another commented: "You're doing so well one step ahead of everyone still on their couch."

Ruth's injury admission comes ahead of her returning to This Morning for the summer.

Next week will see the Loose Women star and her husband Eamonn Holmes back on the blue sofa for six weeks as Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield take a break.

The pair were replaced by Alison Hammond and Dermot O'Leary back in January 2021, with ITV announcing they would be hosting This Morning's Friday show with Ruth and Eamonn standing in for "key holidays" instead.

Speaking in their final show last week, Alison said: "I can't believe it, we've had such a lovely time, thanks to all the crew, staff, gallery and everyone for making it so easy for us… we'll be back in September."

Pointing to Dermot she said: "You've been amazing!"
