Ruth Langsford’s pain at window visit to mum in care home with walkie talkie

This Morning host Ruth Langsford admitted it had been tough for her this week as she could only visit her elderly mother in her care home through a window.

Coronavirus restrictions have meant many people have not been able to physically touch their loved ones who are in care.

Ruth, 60, was only able to speak to her mother Joan via a walkie talkie and they were separated by a window.

Ruth said: "I have to say, I am in the same boat as many people, yesterday I was visiting my mum in her assisted living home.

"I was sitting outside talking to her through the window with a walkie talkie."

"This torture, this mental anguish goes on for so many families who just can't get there to an elderly relative," said Eamonn.

Guest Nina Ambrose appeared on the show and explained to Ruth and co host Eamonn Holmes that she began volunteering in a care home so she could see her elderly father, Roger.

"For my wellbeing it has been incredible it has got me through lockdown, and I hope I inspire some people to volunteer," said Nina.

Nina promised to visit Ruth's mother's care home when she could, to entertain the residents with some singing.

"I promise you I will give your mum's care home a free gig after lockdown," she said.

"Do you know, they would absolutely love that," replied Ruth.

"And I will be there if I am allowed in to watch it, Nina.

"Because they all love singing, they used to have a lot of people coming in and entertaining them before lockdown.

"The staff are doing their absolute best, but they have all got their daily jobs, so it is very hard to do the entertainment as well."
