Ruth Langsford admits she was devastated sending son Jack to university

Ruth Langsford has admitted that she was devastated sending her son Jack to university amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The 60-year-old presenter opened up about driving her son up to uni with husband Eamonn Holmes earlier this month.

This comes as an increasing number of students contract coronavirus, with around 40 universities reporting cases of Covid-19.

Among those more recently to suspend face-to-face teaching is the University of Aberystwyth.

Speaking on Loose Women, Ruth admitted she was "absolutely bereft" sending Jack to university.

"I'm alright now. we took him and he seems to be fine, seems to have settled in alright, but it's a worry now with lockdown."

However, Ruth pointed out that he hadn't really contacted her too much since she dropped him off so he must be fine.

"I think [teenagers] are much more resilient than we think," Ruth said. "I was talking to my mum about it... my mum was saying it's not too much of a hardship being locked in with your phone!"

Initially, there had been fears that students would be banned from returning home for Christmas.

However, a spokesman for the prime minister has confirmed that students will be able to travel back home for the festive period.

Meanwhile, Scottish minister Nicola Sturgeon said that getting students back home would be a priority.
