Ruth Jones on Gavin and Stacey reunion: 'Never say never'

Ruth Jones appears to have left the door slightly ajar when pressed on the possibility of a Gavin and Stacey reunion.

The creator and star, 57, was put on the spot while appearing as a guest on Zoe Ball’s Radio 2 Breakfast Show on Friday, following recent reports that a new special was on the way.

While Jones insisted that there’s no truth in the reports, she is open to the idea, teasing “never say never”.

The 2019 Christmas special of the beloved Barry Island-set sitcom ended on a real cracker with Nessa (Jones) shockingly proposing to James Corden’s Smithy, taking their on-again off-again relationship to a new level after an episode where Smithy had looked ready to tie the knot with his critical new girlfriend (Laura Aikman).

While no new show is currently planned, Jones spoke of where she sees the characters at now.

“Have to ask you, everyone always says, Smithy is still waiting for an answer from Nessa after that proposal,” a determined Ball began her line of questioning.

“Is he though? Is he waiting?” replied Jones. “We don’t know. James and I think those characters exist and that Nessa is still working down the slots in Barry Island at the moment. We like to think their lives are carrying on down there.”

Undeterred, Ball continued to press: “Will we ever see them all together again?”

To which Jones responded: “Who knows, you never say never in this world do you? I don’t know.”

Ball said: “No plans yet, unless she’s bluffing, she’s got a good poker face…”
