Ruth Davidson switches her support to Michael Gove in Tory leadership race

Ruth Davidson has declared support for Michael Gove in the latest round of the Tory leadership contest.

The Scots Tory leader had backed Home Secretary Sajid Javid, but he was eliminated in the previous round this afternoon.

Davidson said she was "very sad" at the result but Gove is now best placed to be Prime Minister.

"I think his experience in Scotland,  the knowledge he brings to some of the key areas as we move forward through Brexit like Scottish fishing and farming can really play a role in helping  communities here," she said.

It's a risky strategy with MPs deciding whether Gove will make it to the next round this evening.

The Record previously revealed how Scots Tories were secretly campaigning to stop Boris Johnson from getting the top job, using the codename Operation A*se.

Johnson is clear frontrunner with either Gove or third challenger Jeremy Hunt facing off in the final round where party members will choose the next PM.
