Ruth Davidson's departure damages Tories which is a win for Scotland

Nothing in Ruth Davidson’s tenure as Scottish Conservative leader became her like the end of it.

The 40-year-old resigned yesterday in a move that sank the party into further chaos and put the future of the UK in even greater jeopardy.

The Record vigorously opposed Davidson throughout her eight years in charge and repeatedly exposed her nonsense about being a more caring type of Tory.

But as she departs the stage of frontline politics it would be churlish not to acknowledge that Davidson has been the most successful Scottish Conservative figure in living memory.

To the horror of many, she has presided over a modest Tory revival in Scotland.

The party had a mere one MP north of the border when she took over – she leaves them with a 13-strong Westminster team.

That success was largely built on Davidson’s own personality and her ability to capitalise on the Scottish constitutional question by winning over No voters to her cause.

It was certainly not a reflection of any wider policy platform.

The Scots Tories were the same right-wing charlatans under her as at any other time in their history.

Davidson’s differences with Boris Johnson are well known and it is understandable she could not stomach working alongside such a character.

But this does genuinely seem to have been a decision that was personal as much as it was political.

Davidson said her priorities have changed and the prospect of spending so much time away from her young son and partner during an election campaign now fill her with “dread”.

It is a sentiment every parent in the country will understand.

So it’s great for her family that Davidson will now get to spend more time with them.

And anything that damages the Tory party is a win for Scotland too.
