Kenya’s Ruth Chepngetich has set a new world half marathon record in stunning fashion.
The 2019 marathon world champion completed Sunday’s race in Istanbul in a time of one hour, four minutes and two seconds.
That was almost half a minute quicker than the previous record, set by Ethiopia’s Ababel Yeshaneh, who took 20 seconds off Joyciline Jepkosgei’s mark in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) last February.
Ethiopian Yalemzerf Yehualaw took second spot at the N Kolay Istanbul Half Marathon on Sunday, finishing 38 seconds behind Chepngetich, who also won the race in 2017 and 2019 respectively.
Chepngetich’s impressive feat comes after Beth Potter appeared to set a new British and world record at the Podium 5k race on Saturday night.
Potter clocked a time of 14 minutes and 41 seconds in Barrowford, Lancashire, but it remains to be seen at this stage if the achievement will be ratified as a new world record.
