Rutgers (1-3) vs. Maryland (2-2) Game Preview
Why Rutgers Will Win
It can’t be as easy as firing the head coach, can it?
Chris Ash is gone, and in the meantime, it’ll be up to tight ends coach Nunzio Campanile to come in and try to generate something from the woeful offense.
It can’t be any worse … unless the Rutgers O produces like Maryland’s did against Penn State.
All of a sudden, the Terps are a hot mess. The offense the blew up Syracuse suffered a painful loss to Temple, and then with the world watching on Friday night, got pantsed by Penn State in a 59-0 loss.
Maryland amassed just 128 yards of total O, couldn’t do anything right, and now can’t get much from the offensive line. On the other side, for all of Rutgers’ problems, the line isn’t doing a bad job of keeping defenses out of the backfield.
The Maryland defensive front couldn’t touch the Nittany Lion quarterback.
Why Maryland Will Win
Rutgers really, really can’t get anything going on offense.
The Scarlet Knight running game rolled against UMass, and it hasn’t been able to hit the 80-yard mark in any of the three games since.
The Terps don’t have a defense like Michigan’s or Iowa’s, but so far in two Big Ten games, Rutgers has been outscored by a combined score of 82-0 with no significantly long drives and nothing that consistently worked.
If Maryland can get anything out of its offense early on, that might be enough. This isn’t a Rutgers team built to keep up the pace.
Don’t expect the Scarlet Knights to come close to hitting the 100-yard mark on the ground, and watch out for QB Josh Jackson to rebound quickly from the miserable performance against Penn State. If those two things happen, Maryland wins.

What’s Going To Happen
Rutgers will play better, but not because it just lost Ash. It still won’t be enough against a Maryland team that desperately needs a great performance. The Terp O won’t go off, but it’ll be a whole lot sharper, the passing game will be a whole lot better, and it’ll be a pull-up-out-of-nosedive win for Mike Locksley.
Maryland really, really, really can’t lose this game, and it’ll play like it.
