'Rusty' Knockout 'ready' for title bout

WBA minimumweight champion Knockout CP Freshmart punches Rey Loreto during their fight last July.

WBA minimumweight champion Knockout CP Freshmart is confident that he will retain the title when he faces Toto Landero of the Philippines in Chon Buri on Tuesday.

The Thai boxer's handlers are equally confident and already in talks for his next fight in China.

"I am ready for the fight," said Knockout (16-0-0, 7KOs).

"We have studied tapes of the challenger's fights. He has good basic skills and is fast but we have done our homework."

Knockout, whose real name is Thammanoon Niyomtrong, outpointed Rey Loreto, also of the Philippines, in his previous fight in July.

The 27-year-old champion from Surin completed a 119-round training programme yesterday.

He is trained by former WBC flyweight champion Chatchai Sasakul.

"I am not worried about the fight. The challenger is fast but his punches lack sharpness and are not hard. Knockout is well-prepared and working hard for the bout," Chatchai said.

Knockout's promoter Piyarat Wachirarattanawong said his boxer could be rusty since his last fight was some seven months ago.

"But I am confident that Knockout is good enough to beat the challenger and keep the belt," said Piyarat, who is negotiating for Knockout's next bout with Xiong Chaozhong of China.

"The talks are going well and it is almost certain that Knockout will make the fifth defence of his title in China," Piyarat said. "I am confident that Knockout will beat Landero."

Landero, who arrived in Bangkok on Thursday, is also confident that he will return home with the championship belt.

"I have been training hard for three months. I am ready to take the belt home," said the 22-year-old Filipino (10-1-2, 2KOs). "I will shock the champion and the Thai fans."

The fight will take place at a makeshift ring outside Chon Buri's provincial hall.

Knockout is one of the three reigning world champions from Thailand, with the other two being WBC super-flyweight title-holder Srisaket Sor Rungvisai and WBC minimumweight king Wanheng Menayothin.
