The producer of Rust says he is "confident" he will be able to finish the film following the conclusion of the police investigation into the fatal shooting of Halyna Hutchins.

Anjul Nigam told The Hollywood Reporter he hoped the investigation into the "horrific tragedy" would be resolved quickly.

Cinematographer Hutchins was killed on the set of the Western in October last year after a prop gun that actor Alec Baldwin held was discharged.

Rust Movie Productions (RMP) has contested the citation by the New Mexico Environment Department that said it "wilfully" violated safety protocols on the movie’s set.

RMP was fined $136,793 (£111,000), the maximum allowable by state law in New Mexico, after the six-month investigation into the incident.

"Rust is obviously a horrific tragedy," Mr Nigam said. "The investigation will hopefully be resolved soon and will unveil what happened.

"We’re confident we’ll be able to complete the movie."

It comes as he and Alec Baldwin announced they are launching a new production company, Persona Entertainment, seven months after the incident.

Its first project False Awakening, starring Baldwin, will be available at the Cannes market.

A report into the fatal shooting of Hutchins found the production company “knew that firearm safety procedures were not being followed on set” and “demonstrated plain indifference to employee safety”.

Director Joel Souza was also wounded in the shooting on the Bonanza Creek Ranch set near Santa Fe.

Police released footage last month showing Baldwin rehearsing with a revolver just hours before the filmmaker was accidentally shot dead.

The Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office released images of the rehearsal and the aftermath of the shooting that killed Hutchins, 42.

In the footage on the set of film, Baldwin draws a revolver and points it towards the camera.

The actor told officers that armourer Hannah Gutierrez Reed, 24, handed the gun - which should have contained blank rounds - directly to him.

The release also included footage of Baldwin’s first police interview.

Baldwin, 64, says he bears no responsibility for the mother-of-one’s death.
