Rust in peace: hydraulic motor dragged from the depths

Rust in peace: A hydraulic tank and motor and a corner section of a container were among the latest items salvaged.

AN hydraulic tank and motor has been hauled off the ocean floor as part of the YM Efficiency container recovery off the Hunter coast.

The items, plus a number of steel beams, were among items pulled from the final six containers to be recovered in the salvage operation.

"Due to their weight, each beam was lifted separately by the (salvage ship) MV Pride, which slowed overnight recovery operations. Both containers are yet to be recovered and the site cleared of debris," an Australian Maritime and Safety Authority spokesman said.

Clean up: A selection of the steel beams that were collected from the sea floor. The salvage operation is nearing completion.

The federal government has commenced legal proceedings against Taiwanese company Yang Ming to recover the $15 million it is spending to salvage the 62 containers lost overboard off the Hunter coast.
