Russian sanctions are a puny response from the UK and Tories are reluctant to take action

Given the way Russia ’s invasion of Ukraine is unfolding, we can expect a ratcheting up of sanctions against Russian banks and oligarchs within the next few days.

The first round of penalties, against five banks and three of Vladimir Putin’s cronies, seem to be a puny response from the UK after the Prime Minister’s fiery threats as soon as “the first Russian boot” steps onto Ukraine territory.

The West, and the Tory government in particular, have been slow to wake up to the thuggish, criminal regime in Moscow,

Where were proper sanctions after the invasion of the Crimea, the shooting down of a civilian airliner over disputed Ukraine territory or when British citizens were killed by poisonous assassins who missed their intended targets in Salisbury?

The Tories have been reluctant to take real action because some of their best friends and donors are Russians.

The hard-hitting defence and intelligence committee report on Russian influence on UK politics from last year lies inactive on the Prime Minister’s desk.

It did not name the oligarchs who have turned London into a laundromat for stolen Russian money but it gave clues to how they use their influence.

The key paragraph stated: “Several members of the Russian elite who are closely linked to Putin are identified as being involved with charitable and/or political organisations in the UK, having donated to political parties.”

In other words, these “Putin-linked elites” who live and invest in London and fund the Tory party are pushing the Kremlin’s agenda, and their own interests.

Until the Tory party tackles this viper’s nest at the heart of British public life, property, finance, and it’s own party funding, Putin will laugh off talk of serious British sanctions.

National Pride

The Pride of Scotland Awards is what the Daily Record is all about.

The wonderful people recognised every year show our country at its best.

Unsung heroes who display remarkable bravery or go the extra mile to help others.

Each year we are bowled over by the incredible stories the award winners allow us to share with our readers.

None more so than last year’s Teenager of Courage winner Lily Douglas.

Lily, who lost her five-year battle with cancer, touched the hearts of the nation with her bravery and beautiful smile.

The inspirational 14-year-old was truly the Pride of Scotland and we were honoured to tell her story.

Nominations are now being invited for this year’s awards.

There will be someone in your community who doesn’t get the credit they deserve for making the lives of those around them better. Tell us who they are and why they should be recognised.

We’re proud to honour the people who, like Lily, represent the best of Scotland.
