Russian romance and royal overtures

Chief conductor Alfonso Scarano will lead the Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra to explore the imaginative tone worlds of two great Russian composers during the "Russian Reveries" concert at the Prince Mahidol Hall of Mahidol University, Salaya campus, on May 3 at 7pm and again on May 4 at 4pm.

The programme will feature Symphony No.2 In E Minor by Rachmaninoff, a virtuoso pianist and conductor whose works are among the most popular in the Romantic repertoire. The second symphony is an epic journey into the very heart of expressive ecstasy and few pieces can rival the third movement's emotional climax. Returning to join the orchestra as guest artist will be Francesca Dego, who will perform the Violin Concerto No.1 In A Minor by Shostakovich, one of the major composers of the 20th century.

Celebrated for her sonorous tone, compelling interpretations and flawless technique, Dego is one of the most sought-after young violinists on the international scene. Last year saw the release of her latest recital disc Suite Italienne, on which she pays homage to the aesthetic and influence of 20th-century Italian musical styles. The concert will also bring the audience to celebrate the upcoming royal coronation of HM King Rama X, with Prateep Suphanrojn's Maha Vajiralongkorn Overture.

Tickets cost 400, 600, 800, 1,000 and 1,500 baht (half prices for students), and can be purchased from Thai Ticket Major (visit thaiticketmajor.com or call 02-262-3456) and PMH Box Office (call 02-849-6565/6 ext 6603/4 and 66624.
