Russian PM Mikhail Mishustin has coronavirus as country reports 100,000 cases

Russia's Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin has fallen ill with coronavirus.

The 54-year-old leader has told the country's President Vladimir Putin that he has been diagnosed with Covid-19, Reuters reports.

It comes as Russia's number of confirmed coronavirus cases passes 100,000.

Speaking at a televised meeting, Mr Mishustin suggested that First Deputy Prime Minister Andrey Belousov should serve as acting prime minister in his absence.

Mr Putin supported his proposal, as the virus today was confirmed to have spread to all 85 of Russia's regions.

The country has so far recorded 106,498 Covid-19 cases, and 1,073 coronavirus-related deaths.

Pressure is mounting on the government to consider easing lockdown restrictions to help businesses as the vast country's economy struggles with the blow.

Russia, the world's largest country by territory, has been on lockdown since Mr Putin announced the closure of most public spaces in late March.

These measures were due to expire today, but any announcements are yet to have been made.

Mr Putin said on Tuesday it was likely the lockdown would extend for at least two more weeks, as he continued to urge Russians to stay home, the Moscow Times reports.

He said a phased exit could begin after May 11.

Russia overtook China in the number of confirmed coronavirus cases on Monday, as pressure on business grew.

Moscow has been the hardest hit of the Russian regions, and has imposed the strictest lockdown measures.

Many firms warned they risked going bankrupt if the lockdown continues, saying thousands of workers have already been laid off amid the pandemic.

Moscow is planning to open two new hospitals, with 1,500 beds
each, in the defence ministry's Patriot museum and in the Crocus
exhibition centre, according to local reports.

St Petersburg, the country's second largest city, is also turning Lenexpo, which used to host Russia's top economic forum, into a temporary hospital with 1,000 beds.
