A Russian general has died in a fatal car bombing in Moscow, according to officials.

Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was reportedly killed on Monday morning after an explosive device that was attached to the underside of his car detonated, Russia's Investigative Committee says.

The 56-year-old was the head of the armed forces' operational training department, the committee added.

Speculation surrounds the case, with theories circling about Ukrainian intelligence services planting the bomb.

Ukraine has not responded.

Sarvarov was taken to the hospital to be treated for his injuries, where he died.

The committee added that it had launched an investigation into murder and the illegal trafficking of explosive devices.

Investigators have set upon the scene of the explosion, which took place in a car park near an apartment block in the south of Moscow.

Images from the scene depict a badly damaged white car, which has its doors blown out, parked near other vehicles.

Russian media say that Sarvarov previously participated in combat operations during the Ossetian-Ingush war and the Chechen wars in the 1990s and 2000s. He is also understood to have led operations in Syria between 2015-2016.

Russian President Vladimir Putin was immediately informed of Sarvarov's death, Dmitry Peskov, the Kremlin spokesperson, said.

Since Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, several senior military officials and high-profile individuals have been assassinated in Moscow.

One of whom was Darya Dugina, the 29-year-old daughter of a Putin ally and high-ranking Russian was killed in an alleged car bombing in 2022.

Last April, Gen Yaroslav Moskalik was also killed by a car bomb, followed by Gen Igor Kirillov in December 2024, when a device attached to a scooter was remotely detonated.

According to a Ukrainian source for the BBC, Kirillov was assassinated by Ukraine's security service.

However, this claim was never officially confirmed. Ukraine never officially admits or claims responsibility for targeted attacks as a matter of policy.
