Russian Presidential Envoy to Syria Alexander Yefimov addressed Russians in the war-torn country and Syrian citizens on Friday on the occasion of Russia day.

In his address, the first since his appointment as envoy a few weeks ago, Yefimov adopted the rhetoric of President Vladimir Putin, using zealous phrases about Russia’s unlimited ability to face challenges and emerge victorious.

Yefimov affirmed that challenges do not worry Russia, stressing that the country has overcome a thousand years of challenging times.

He slammed the West for not heeding the UN chief’s call to mitigate sanctions against the Syrian government under the coronavirus pandemic.

He warned that the pressure of sanctions against Syria will get worse, but expressed his confidence that Moscow and Damascus will not succumb to economic terrorism, saying that the attempts to bring the two countries to their knees will fail.

The presidential envoy said that “Russia will not abandon Syria in this difficult period,” noting that the two states have reached the highest levels of confidence and mutual understanding during the years fighting a war against a common enemy.

Yefimov said that Putin’s visit to Damascus last January had given bilateral ties a new impetus and sent a unified message to all enemies that Moscow will not abandon its principled venture to support the Syrian people.

“Events happening daily in the world, especially in Syria, confirm that Russia and its allies are standing on the right side of history,” Yefimov added.

He cited recent Syrian achievements made with the help of Russia in the last period.

“The government regained control over new territory, the settlement process through the work of the constitutional committee was launched, work to rehabilitate infrastructure kickstarted, and tens of thousands of displaced persons and refugees returned to their homes,” Yefimov said.
