Russian Doll season 2: Netflix renews 'mindblowing' series starring Natasha Lyonne

Netflix has renewed its critically adored series Russian Dollfor a second season.

News of the forthcoming eight-episode series was announced during the CODE Conference in Arizona, US on Tuesday 11 June.

Russian Doll stars co-creator Natasha Lyonne as a New York woman who gets caught in an endless loop of attending her own birthday party, only to die and have to repeat the night over again.

The first season also starred Greta Lee, Yul Vazquez, Charlie Barnett and Elizabeth Ashley, with Chloë Sevigny, Dascha Polanco and Brendan Sexton III among those to appear in guest roles.

It was released in February 2019 to near-universal acclaim, and currently holds a 96 per cent critical approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

“As the series proceeds, it gets more ambitious and more complicated in a way that’s gratifying to watch,” Sophie Gilbert wrote for The Atlantic. ”It’s still anchored, though, by its sense of place and time, and by the infinite possibilities that a night walking around New York City presents.”

Joel Keller for Decider said: “Lyonne puts on the performance of her career in this funny, emotional series.”

“Same show, just weirder,” said Lyonne, confirming the news from the conference. “The character is a coder, so it would be appropriate to have this be the time and place to say, yes. So very much yes, I would love to do [a second season].”
