Russian cosmonaut told 'Drop everything and go back right away' after space emergency

A Russian cosmonaut has been told 'drop everything and go back right away' after a space walk emergency.

Russian cosmonaut Oleg Artemyev was forced to return to the airlock at the International Space Station (ISS) after an electrical problem on his spacesuit.

Alongside Denis Matveev, Oleg headed outside the ISS at around 13:53pm on Wednesday to begin a six-and-a-half hour spacewalk.

However, out of the two cosmonauts working on Wednesday, Oleg had to return after an electrical issue on his space suit forced Moscow's ground control to end the routine space walk early, U.S. and Russian officials said.

Oleg returned safely, according to officials.

The pair had been continuing to dress up the European Space Agency’s robotic arm, which was delivered to the complex last year, when they headed out the Poisk airlock for their six-and-a-half-hour spacewalk.

The 37-foot-long arm was delivered last July on Russia’s Nauka multipurpose laboratory module - alongside Japanese and Canada arms which are located outside the space station.

The huge arms are outside the US space station - with the Russian segment in close proximity to the European arm.

Oleg and Denis were looking to install cameras on the European Robotic Arm whilst adjusting the mechanisms before their trip was quickly cut short.
