Russian conscript desperate to escape to UK after friends killed in Ukraine war

A Russian conscript is desperate to flee to the UK to avoid having to fight in Vladimir Putin's Ukraine war.

Vadim, 22, from Kaliningrad, was reportedly served papers last week and must present himself to his local enlistment office on Tuesday (October 4).

The young man says he'll do whatever he can to avoid being sent to the front and becoming "cannon fodder" for the Kremlin.

He claims his pal Eduard, 21, was killed by a landmine after being sent to fight two weeks ago.

Vadim says getting to Britain could be his best ticket out of the war - but he is willing to "do literally anything", including being sectioned in a psychiatric hospital.

He told the Sun: "I don't want to go to war, and being in the UK would allow me to avoid it.

"I won't be killing Ukrainians. I don’t want to kill."

Vadim was studying radiation technician and currently works in a bar.

He has previously done one year of mandatory military service at age 17 and passed with flying colours despite a knee issue which prevents him walking for very long.

"They turned a blind eye to this [injury] and gave me the highest category of fitness," he explained.

Last month President Putin announced the mobilisation of 300,000 Russian troops in a desperate bid to ignite his stuttering invasion of the former Soviet ally.

Seven months ago he launched his 'special military operation' and expected his lacklustre forces to conquer Ukraine capital Kyiv within a matter of days.

However, they have been pushed back at almost every turn by Ukrainian fighters, armed with more advanced NATO weaponry and intel.

US officials estimate Russia is losing 500 soldiers a day as the defending forces barge them out of the eastern regions.

There are reports of the new conscripts being given no training before being sent to the frontlines with rusty guns.

Footage showed conscripts setting fire to enlistment offices to avoid the draft.

Vadim says his mum has told him to go and register to fight because she is scared he will be jailed if he doesn't.

He said troops have been sweeping through car parks to hand out draft letters.

Last week Putin announced the annexation of fallen regions Luhansk, Donetsk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia, and vowed to "defend our land with all means".

Vadim added: "As soon as the cannon fodder on the front line runs out, they will call us, those who have no training."
