The presidents of Russia, Turkey and Iran will meet in Tehran next week, announced the Kremlin on Friday.

Vladimir Putin, Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Hassan Rouhani had last met in April in Ankara, where they discussed developments in Syria.

Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters that the Russian and Turkish leaders were also expected to hold a bilateral meeting, reported Russia’s TASS news agency.

Earlier reports said that the trilateral summit could take place in the Iranian city of Tabriz on September 7.

"Iran has informed us that they were back to the Tehran option so the trilateral meeting is going to be held in Tehran," Peskov said.

The meeting will be held as the Syrian regime prepares to wage an offensive on the northwestern province of Idlib, one of the last remaining opposition strongholds in the war-torn country.
