New supermarket chain rivalling Lidl and Aldi to open '300 UK stores'

A Russian discount supermarket chain has revealed more plans about opening hundreds of stores in the UK.

Svetofor, which trades as Mere in Europe, first opened in Siberia in 2009 and claims to be even cheaper than Aldi and Lidl.

According to reports, the chain could be as much as 30 per cent cheaper than the German budget retailers.

And it's now been revealed that plans to open outlets in this country are beginning to take shape, according to Manchester Evening News.

Speaking to The Grocer earlier this month, Mere’s head of UK buying Pavels Antonovs claimed the supermarket would be 30 percent cheaper than rivals.

He said: “We are the gap in the market. We don’t have any competitors.

"Our model is no service and no marketing."

Mere compares itself to Costco, but with no membership fee and no in-store service.

It's also understood that each store will only have eight workers, and be around 10,000 square feet.

The shops are also said to include a walk-in chiller room and freezer, and items are typically sold directly from the pallets they're delivered on.

It is reported to be ready to open its first UK branch next month - at a former Nisa in Preston.

The Russian chain currently has 3,200 stores and opened its first European Mere branch in 2018.
