Russia Launches Major Assault on Ukraine’s Energy Infrastructure Amid Freezing Temperatures

According to Zelenskyy, the strikes were a deliberate and targeted assault on energy facilities across multiple regions. In a post on X, he said Russia used a significant number of ballistic missiles, alongside other missile types, in one of the largest recent aerial attacks.

The strikes hit the Sumy and Kharkiv regions, the Kyiv region and the capital itself, as well as the Dnipro, Odesa and Vinnytsia regions. Zelenskyy said recovery work was already under way nationwide to restore damaged infrastructure and essential services.

At least nine people were reported injured in the attacks. Zelenskyy said there was damage to ordinary residential buildings and critical energy infrastructure. In Kyiv, drone strikes sparked fires in high-rise buildings and damaged a kindergarten, prompting the deployment of emergency and recovery services.

“Recovery efforts following the Russian strike across our regions are ongoing,” Zelenskyy said. “Once again, there was a targeted attack specifically on energy facilities.”

He accused Moscow of exploiting the coldest days of winter to terrorize civilians rather than pursuing diplomacy. Zelenskyy emphasized Ukraine’s urgent need for timely deliveries of air defence missiles and increased international pressure on Russia.

“Taking advantage of the coldest days of winter to terrorize people is more important to Russia than turning to diplomacy,” he said, adding that without sustained pressure on Moscow, the war would continue.

Zelenskyy thanked Ukraine’s international partners for their support, stressing that strengthening air defences and protecting normal life remained the country’s top priorities as Russia continued to escalate its attacks.
