Jan. 03--For the second year in a row the United States has been eliminated from the junior world hockey championship tournament without earning a medal.
The Americans lost to Russia, 3-2, in a penalty-marred quarterfinal game on Friday at the Bell Centre in Montreal despite putting 41 shots on goal compared with 25 by the Russians. There were 14 minor penalties in the game, eight called on the U.S.
"If you have to kill off that many penalties in a row you spend a lot of energy," U.S. Coach Mark Osiecki said. "That caught up to us. We were very disciplined before and for some reason it didn't work out today."
Russia took a 2-0 lead in the first period on a a power-play goal by Ivan Barbashev and a rebound shot by Alexander Sharov. Sergei Tolchinsk scored on a power play early in the third period for the Russians to stretch their lead to 3-1.
The U.S. was penalized five times in the opening period, including twice in the opening minutes, and gave up the first goal when the Russians had a two-man advantage.
Anthony DeAngelo scored midway through the second period to draw the U.S. to within 2-1 and Zach Werenski added the final goal in the third period.
The U.S., which won the event two years ago, went 3-1 in pool play, a 5-3 loss to Canada the only blemish. Russia will advance to a semifinal game against Sweden, a 6-3 winner over defending champion Finland.
