A major earthquake with a magnitude of 7.4 has struck off Russia's far east.

The quake off Russia's Kamchatka peninsula, which was initially measured at 7.8 before being revised downwards, struck 82km west of Nikolskoye at a depth of 9km.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre initially said hazardous tsunami waves from the earthquake were possible within 300 km of the epicentre along the coasts of Russia.

However, Russian RIA and TASS news agencies, citing officials at the local Emergencies Ministry, said there was no threat of a tsunami.

Russia's Emergencies Ministry said that, according to preliminary information, there was no damage to Kamchatka peninsula.

Some small landslides have been reported but there have been no reports of any fatalities.

Nikolskoye is a rural fishing and farming town.

Russian President Vladimir Putin is yet to comment.
