SEOUL -- A senior South Korean official at the presidential office in Seoul said Wednesday that a Russian military attache expressed regret over an airspace violation incident to the South Korean Defense Ministry's policy planning officer.
The attache reportedly said the Tuesday incident in which a Russian military aircraft apparently entered an unplanned flight area over Takeshima, Shimane Prefecture, was due to an equipment malfunction. South Korea illegally occupies the islets, which it calls Dokdo.
There would have been no violation of the airspace had the military aircraft flown along the originally planned route, the attache reportedly said, adding that there was no intention to violate the airspace since Russia respects international law and the laws of South Korea.
