Russell Wilson picked apart zone defenses in 2018

Even though Brian Schottenheimer’s run-heavy offense limited his opportunities to throw the ball, Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson was absolutely dominant during the 2018 season.

He threw for a career-high 35 touchdowns along with a career-high 110.9 quarterback rating, while leading the team to a 10-6 record.

Pro Football Focus loved Wilson’s performance last season, giving him an overall grade of 89.2 and even calling him underrated despite his success over the past seven seasons.

Last year saw Wilson post elite grades in nearly every metric, including on deep balls, in clutch situations, and most recently against zone defenses.

Wilson narrowly edged out Kansas City’s Patrick Mahomes and Atlanta’s Matt Ryan to post the highest passer rating against zone defenses last season, earning an even 110 rating.

Wilson has always shown an elite ability to read opposing defenses, and can use his legs to stay on his feet and find the open man. With Tyler Lockett and Doug Baldwin both outstanding and coming back to the ball, Wilson was able to carve up opposing zone defenses last season.

Losing Baldwin will hurt, but Wilson should continue to thrive against zone defenses in 2019.
