Russell Wilson gets 4-year contract extension with Seahawks

The Arizona Cardinals will not be trading for Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson. The Cardinals will also not be rid of Wilson within the division. He will remain in the NFC West and is now the highest-paid player in the NFL.

He and the Seahawks agreed to a four-year, $140 million contract extension, keeping him in Seattle for five more seasons. He had one year remaining on his contract.

Here are the details, as reported by NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport:

Wilson had given the Seahawks a hard deadline of April 15 to have a long-term contract done or he would not negotiate with them again, according to reports. That led to some crazy speculation of trades that would send him to New York or the Cardinals and that would include Arizona’s first overall pick in this month’s draft.

Wilson has been very good in his career with the Seahawks and great against the Cardinals. While the Cardinals have had Seattle’s number on the road over the last several years, the Cardinals have not beaten the Seahawks in Arizona since the 2012 season opener, Wilson’s NFL debut.

Wilson’s new deal all but guarantees Seattle will be a playoff contender for years to come.
