Russell Wilson didn’t know he’d be out vs. Broncos until day or 2 before

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson was busying preparing all last week for his first preseason game. He didn’t know he’d be on the bench until shortly before the Denver matchup.

“I think it was a day or two before the game,” Wilson told reporters Monday, when asked when he found out he wasn’t going to play. “Probably two days before the game, maybe, they mentioned that I probably wouldn’t.”

Backup Geno Smith got the start Thursday night and played through the first half. Paxton Lynch subbed in after and finished the outing. Coach Pete Carroll had announced Wednesday Wilson would sit this matchup out.

“Yeah, for me, I really prepared like I was going to play the whole week, to be honest with you guys,” Wilson said. “My mind was ready to play. When I went to warmups and all that, I was drenched in sweat ready to roll. I think the biggest thing is just playing the game in your head as you’re out there watching.”

With Smith recovering from a knee procedure, the Seahawks added another backup for insurance, signing J.T. Barrett on Saturday. Regardless, Wilson is looking ahead to next Sunday when Seattle squares off aginst the Vikings in Minnesota.
