Russell Westbrook wanted more ‘accountability’ from Harden, Rockets

After playing three seasons together in Oklahoma City from 2009 through 2012, the strong relationship between All-Star guards and former MVPs James Harden and Russell Westbrook was often cited as a reason for their decision to reunite with the Houston Rockets last year.

But it clearly came with more challenges than expected.

Besides meshing their ball-dominant styles on the court, it now appears evident that there were at least a few issues behind the scenes, too. Westbrook has now requested a trade, and a story by Sam Amick, Kelly Iko, and Shams Charania of The Athletic sheds new light on why.

Here are details from Wednesday night’s story:

Westbrook, sources say, has made it known for quite some time now that he would like to see significant changes to the Rockets’ culture. Specifically, his desire for more team-wide accountability, discipline and structure have been the focus of talks with team officials. Throughout the season, Westbrook was the consistent presence who kept Harden accountable and the two close friends had several verbal exchanges that sources described as “tense, but needed.

During a January locker room meeting following a home loss to Portland, Westbrook, who was leading the meeting, went around the room indicating what was wrong and what each player needed to do to fix the losing streak, starting with himself, sources said. When it came to Harden, however, he wasn’t as receptive to criticism as other teammates, sources said.

The Rockets have replaced GM Daryl Morey and head coach Mike D’Antoni with Rafael Stone and Stephen Silas, respectively, but that doesn’t seem to have resolved Westbrook’s concerns (judging by the trade request).

Harden, on the other hand, reportedly remains committed to Houston for the upcoming season. Both Harden and Westbrook are under contract for at least two additional seasons, but the ball is now in Stone’s court as to whether their latest partnership will continue.
