BUDAPEST (Reuters) - Mercedes reserve George Russell produced the fastest ever lap of the Hungaroring on the final day of a Formula One test on Wednesday.
The British Formula Two series leader did 116 laps with an unofficial track record time of one minute 15.575 seconds, three days after Mercedes won the Hungarian Grand Prix with compatriot Lewis Hamilton.
Russell, 20, was using the Pirelli hypersoft tyre, the quickest in the range and which was not available for drivers at the weekend.
Championship leader Hamilton is the only Briton on the Formula One starting grid at present but Russell is tipped to step up next season, possibly with Mercedes-powered former champions Williams.
Ferrari's 2007 world champion Kimi Raikkonen was second fastest with a time of 1:15.649.
