Russell Martin's loan admission and the Swansea City youngster who took his chance

Russell Martin is running the rule over a number of Swansea City youngsters before determining whether or not to send them out on loan.

Academy product Dan Williams shone on his debut for the club at Reading last week while others including Ollie Cooper and Tivonge Rushesha are bidding to follow the likes of Ben Cabango, Steven Benda and Connor Roberts in establishing themselves as first team players.

However, with Swansea's squad still thin in areas, Martin is keen to further add to his squad prior to the August 31 transfer deadline.

He has already recruited Jamie Paterson and Flynn Downes after Kyle Joseph, Liam Walsh and Joel Piroe joined the club earlier in the summer.

Manchester United defender Ethan Laird is also poised to join the Swans on a season-long loan deal having undergone a medical with the club on Sunday.

But head coach Martin is giving his young players every opportunity to prove themselves before the end of the month.

"We need to assess really quickly if they're going to be needed by us," said the Swansea boss.

"Everyone's going to be needed, but what's best for their development? Dan took an opportunity brilliantly on Tuesday [against Reading] which might lead to other opportunities.

"I've had a really good chat with Ollie about where he's at and what he feels is best for him because he's missed eight months of games.

"It's about assessing all of that, and, if they're better off being with us until Christmas at least, and see if they get opportunities and by that point they understand exactly what we want in terms of the day to day stuff and what we're looking for in their position.

"Or, are they better off going out and playing some football? I think it will be really different for each individual.

"Ollie is different to Dan. Tiv is injured at the moment, so we'll keep him here. We just need to take our time with him."

Goalkeeper Josh Gould joined National League South outfit Ebbsfleet United on loan until January last week.

And Swansea boss Martin admits further loan exits could go down to the wire as he continues to mould his squad having only joined the club little more than a fortnight ago.

"With Josh, on the first day I was in, someone asked me about the loan and what I thought. I thought it was a good opportunity for him to go and play some games," admitted Martin.

"So I think you have to take every one on an individual basis and we'll have to see again in another couple of weeks where everyone's at when we've got a bit more clarity.

"There's still time to get them on loan if we need to sort that out."
