Russell Martin's Jake Silverstein talks as Swansea City chief outlines transfer hope

The early season enthusiasm of the Jack Army swiftly dissipated during the course of Swansea City's grim 3-0 loss to Blackburn Rovers.

While only being the second game of the 2022/23 campaign, defeat was both frustrating and concerning for supporters given the significant amount of work undergone in the last 12 months.

The hosts lacked dynamism and much of their play was pedestrian as they were picked off by Jon Dahl Tomasson's men, who capitalised on Swansea's mistakes to leave south Wales with all three points.

With only Joe Allen still to come back into the squad, it is clear that Swansea need more in the final weeks of the summer transfer window.

Director Jake Silverstein was in attendance for the miserable loss to Rovers, and the American will no doubt have concerns in his mind when he heads back across the Atlantic.

It is clear that, unless they offload more players or generate a significant sum for a key man, there won't be more money to spend this summer following the arrivals of Allen, Matty Sorinola, Harry Darling and Nathan Wood.

But many, if not most, Championship clubs find themselves in exactly the same position. Martin has revealed he now has further clarity over the Swans' current situation and aims having met Silverstein this week.

"I really get on with Jake," the head coach said. "He's a really good guy and has a great understanding of what we're trying to do. He has a real patience with what we're trying to do, it's why we were brought here.

"We don't have the financial resource we did with Premier League parachute payments and all that stuff. Jake knows where we would like to strengthen, he's also been really honest about the financial situation.

"It's all you can ever ask for is honesty and transparency, just dealing with good people. I speak to Jake quite a lot. He's been great to deal with since he's been involved. I can't moan about it, I know the situation, we knew it coming in.

"Do we have a group we feel are really capable of doing something already? Yeah. 100%. Would we like to add to it? Yeah. I'm pretty sure every manager would love to add to their group, especially as the games go on.

"We'll just have to wait and see. I don't know what's going to go on between now and the end of the window closing. I don't know who's going to be in and who's going to be out. We'll continue working with what we'd love, what we like and what we feel we need. There's a difference between necessity and wanting something.

"But it's good to see him and have even more clarity about the situation and the plans for the club. You have to balance that with supporters wanting success. Every supporter wants success for their football club, especially here where they've seen Premier League football and they've had it for so long.

"But I'm pretty sure the success was built on some tough times in the transition under Roberto many years ago and sticking with it. We'll stick with this for as long as we're wanted here and deemed good enough to do the job.

"We really believe in it and over a period of time we really believe that we can be really successful here, but I completely understand their frustrations today."

Chief executive Julian Winter has stated the club will continue to strive to make additions to the squad before the 11pm deadline on September 1. "We did some early transfer business with the signings of Nathan Wood, Harry Darling and Matty Sorinola and while we were disappointed to lose a player like Flynn Downes, it allowed us to bring in Joe Allen and I’m sure our supporters are very much looking forward to seeing Joe pull on the Swansea shirt once more," said the chief executive in the weekend's matchday programme.

"As we are all aware, the summer transfer window is still open and we are working hard behind the scenes to ensure we finish the month in an even stronger position that we are at the time of writing."
