Russell Martin reveals Swansea City's best bit of transfer business as boss discusses glowing Fin Stevens references

Russell Martin believes Swansea City's best summer transfer window business was to keep hold of Joel Piroe and Michael Obafemi.

Both strikers were the subject of fierce transfer interest, with Burnley having three bids rejected for Obafemi while Leeds United approached the Swans about the availability of Piroe.

But interest in both forwards - who netted 36 times between them last term - was rebuffed by the Swans who now keep their two key sources of goals at the club.

"We didn’t undersell any players or need to sell any players because of the brilliant business we did with Flynn Downes earlier on in the window," said Martin. "That’s the player trading model at this club currently. We finished the day stronger [on Thursday] than we started it which I think on deadline day is the biggest hope for anyone, so we’re really pleased.

"I think the best bit of business are the people we kept in the building, Joel in particular. We’re really pleased Michael is still here. If we’d have known weeks in the build-up, then you have a different feeling and you can prepare a bit better, but it all happened so late."

Following a tense deadline day, the Swans bolstered their squad with the loan arrival of Fin Stevens from Brentford. He joins Armstrong Oko-Flex and Luke Cundle in joining the club on loan this week, and Martin has revealed Wales under-21 international Stevens will be included in his matchday squad for the Championship clash with Queens Park Rangers on Saturday.

"He comes in a position that we needed to strengthen," admitted Martin. "Real potential, a good athlete, we’ve watched him a lot with Wales under-21s.

"We watched him in the cup this season for Brentford and he’s been in and around the first team for a while. I spoke to a couple of people about him at Brentford, coaches and players, and they spoke very highly of him as a character first and foremost, and his potential as a player.

"Their belief is that he could adapt to the Championship quite easily. He adds a lot. He’s another young, hungry player. We need to bed him in and give him some time, but he’ll be straight into the squad [on Saturday]."

Swansea have no fresh injury concerns ahead of the league clash with QPR. Ben Cabango is set to return from suspension after being banned for the trip to Stoke City on Wednesday.
