Russell Martin confirms Jake Bidwell to leave Swansea City amid intense Coventry City speculation

Jake Bidwell is closing in on a move from Swansea City to Coventry City.

The left wing-back was omitted from the Swans' squad for their Championship clash with Huddersfield Town at The John Smith's Stadium on Saturday.

It came after he was an unused substitute in Swansea's four matches prior to the contest with the Terriers in west Yorkshire.

The 28-year-old is out of contract in the summer and was unable to agree fresh terms to extend his stay with the club.

As a result, Russell Martin informed the former Everton, Queens Park Rangers and Brentford man that he could depart this month.

And he is poised to join Championship rivals Coventry in the coming days.

"He's very close to agreeing a move to somewhere else," explained Martin.

"He is a fantastic pro, a fantastic person and he goes with everyone's best wishes if it happens.

"I have to be really honest with players about the long-term vision for the club. He was out of contract in the summer, and if he found something that suits him and his family, then I don't want to stand in his way.

"He's been brilliant here, with us and with the previous manager, so the person comes before the player. We could be really selfish and keep him.

"He hasn't played too much recently, when he did he was great for us. He has an opportunity to do something him and his family want to do."

The trimming of the wage bill will help Swansea finance further moves in the transfer market - with MK Dons midfielder Matt O'Riley among those being targeted by the Swans.

Andy Fisher and Cyrus Christie have already been recruited from MK Dons and Fulham respectively while Kyle Joseph was recalled from his season-long loan spell with Cheltenham Town.

Bidwell has made a total 105 appearances for Swansea, scoring three goals.
