Russell Knox wins Travelers Championship with 2-under 68

CROMWELL, Conn. _ Russell Knox shot 2-under par 68 on Sunday at TPC River Highlands to win the Travelers Championship by one shot over Jerry Kelly.

Knox, who grew up in Scotland, but lives in Jacksonville, Fla., made a par putt of about 12 feet on No. 18 to claim his second PGA Tour title and the $1,188,00 prize for first place.

Kelly was waiting near the clubhouse for a possible playoff when he heard the roar of the crowd on No. 18 and learned his fate.

Knox finished the tournament at 14-under 266. Kelly was second at 13-under 267 after shooting 6-under 64 on Sunday.

Knox got in trouble off the tee on No. 18, hitting his drive in the rough on the right hill. But after landing his second shot in the right green side bunker, Knox recovered with a sand save, leaving himself 12 feet, 1 inch for the tournament title. Knox's par putt curled right to left and dropped into the cup, setting off a loud cheer from the crowd.

After a bogey on No. 16 cut his lead down to one, Knox had to make par on the last two holes. He did.

Knox started the day three shots back of leader Daniel Berger. But he finished with four birdies and two bogeys on his final round for his fourth straight round in the 60s.

Berger struggled all day, shooting 4-over 74 to end the tournament at 11-under and tied for fifth. Knox was paired with Berger in the final round. He started his round at 12-under tied with Tyrone Van Aswegen and Russell Henley.

Earlier in the day, Jim Furyk, 46, made golf history at the Travelers Championship at TPC River Highlands. He shot 12-under par 58 in his final round to become the first golfer in PGA Tour history to shoot 58 in a round.

Furyk started his final round at 8:41 a.m. and was part of the third group to tee off Sunday.

He was 1-over after Saturday's third round and 16 shots behind Berger. When he finished play in the tournament to chants of "58" on No. 18, he was four shots off the lead. Furyk completed the Travelers Championship at 11-under 269 and was tied for fifth with Robert Garrigus, Tyrone Van Aswegen and Berger.

Furyk had 10 birdies and an eagle on his round. He finished with seven pars. He started his round with a birdie on No. 2, an eagle on No. 3 and a birdie on No. 4. He then made six straight birdies from No. 6 to No. 12. He made his last birdie on No. 16. Furyk shot a Travelers Championship record 8-under 27 on the front nine and four-under 31 on the back nine.

Furyk entered Sunday as one of six golfers to shoot 59 in his career. Furyk shot 59 in 2013 at the BMW Championship. Al Geiberger, Chip Beck, David Duval, Paul Goydos and Stuart Appleby also shot 59.

After Furyk completed play and signed his scorecard, he was met by Travelers Executive chairman of the board Jay Fishman and Travelers Executive Vice President and Chief Administrative Andy Bessette. They told him Travelers was going to donate $58,000 to a charity of his choice. Furyk told the pair he wanted to donate it to the Bruce Edwards Foundation, which supports research in the fight against ALS. Fishman has ALS, but insisted that half of the donation go to Furyk's foundation: The Jim & Tabitha Furyk foundation, which helps families and children in need.
