An annual release of water, which has become a tourist attraction, took place at Kurobe Dam in the town of Tateyama in Toyama Prefecture on Friday.
The release of water from the dam, 1,454 meters above sea level, marks the beginning of summer in the northern Japan Alps. The dam is operated by Kansai Electric Power Co.
The main purpose of the discharge is to maintain the water level in the Kurobe River and to maintain the scenic beauty of the canyon. The water roars as it rushes out at a rate of about 15 tons per second from valves on the arch dam, which is the tallest in Japan at 186 meters. Water will be discharged every day until Oct. 15.
"I'm impressed with how dynamic the water is when it's released, and the beautiful scenery," said a 37-year-old company employee from Fujinomiya, Shizuoka Prefecture.
