Rush University Medical Center plans to add new hospital dedicated to critical illness recovery and inpatient rehabilitation to its West Side medical campus.

The new 84-bed facility, which will be named Rush Specialty Hospital, is part of a joint venture with Pennsylvania-based Select Medical Corp. The new hospital, which needs regulatory approval, is expected to be completed in 2022.

The deal also calls for Select Medical to rebrand 62 NovaCare Rehabilitation, Select Physical Therapy and Michiana Orthopaedic & Sports Physical Therapy locations in the Chicago area and northern Indiana as Rush Physical Therapy.

“In a post-COVID-19 world, post-acute services will be even more important, and as a national standard-bearer of quality and safety, Rush was looking for a strategic partner that would complement the excellent care our patients and their families have come to expect,” said Dr. Ranga Krishnan, CEO of Rush University System for Health.

Select Medical will be the majority owner and managing partner of the new hospital and Rush Physical Therapy, which will include the Rush Rehabilitation center. Financial terms weren’t disclosed.

“Rush and Select Medical share a strong commitment to clinical excellence guided by innovative, research-based care, quality and safety. Together we will deliver world-class care and outcomes to patients with critical illness or catastrophic injury that puts them on a recovery path back to community and home,” said David S. Chernow, president and CEO of Select Medical.
