Rush hour chaos as Scots motorway closed following three-vehicle smash

A busy motorway was closed earlier on Wednesday following a three-vehicle smash at the peak of rush hour.

Emergency services rushed to the westbound carriageway of the M8 motorway at Junction 3A, between Livingston and Blackburn, shortly before 5pm. The road was closed for an hour while workers attended to the vehicles involved.

It is not known whether anyone has been injured. However, motorists have been warned to expect delays while the area is cleared and existing traffic begins moving once again after being diverted off of the carriageway.

Road network monitors Traffic Scotland said: "All lanes now running Westbound at J3A following an earlier collision. Traffic remains heavy on the approach however should begin to ease shortly."

It shared an image of the collided vehicles on social media, along with picture of traffic winding its way around the incident before being diverted by a police car.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Police were called around 4.45pm on Wednesday, 5 October, 2022 following the report of a three vehicle road crash on the M8 westbound at junction 3A near Bathgate. Emergency services are currently in attendance."

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "We can confirm we were called to attend a road traffic collision on the M8 between Junction 3 and Junction 3A."
