A small town on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, Ridgely, has made headlines by suspending its entire police force pending an investigation by state prosecutors. The decision has left residents shocked, skeptical, and concerned about public safety.

The crackdown on law enforcement in Ridgely reflects the impact of the national reckoning on policing following George Floyd’s killing. With the Ridgely Police Department temporarily defunct, other public safety agencies have stepped in to fill the void, but residents worry about response times in case of emergencies.

The lack of transparency from town leaders and law enforcement has frustrated residents like Laura Cline, who emphasized the importance of honest communication with the community.

The suspension of the police force came without warning, and town officials have provided minimal information about the reasons behind it. The Office of State Prosecutor is conducting an investigation into the matter.

Ridgely has a history of controversial policing practices, notably highlighted by the 2018 death of Anton Black. The current chief of police, Jeff Eckrich, has a background in the Prince George’s County Police Department before joining Ridgely.

Residents are concerned about slower response times and reduced law enforcement presence, but neighboring agencies have assured that they are equipped to handle the additional calls for service.

Despite the recent developments, crime rates in Caroline County, which includes Ridgely, have been consistently low. The Ridgely Police Department has been primarily involved in addressing minor public safety issues and engaging with the community through various events and initiatives.

With a population of about 1,600, Ridgely is known for its small-town charm and rich history tied to the American railroad expansion. The town has faced scrutiny in the past, particularly after Anton Black’s tragic arrest.

Maryland lawmakers passed police accountability measures in 2021, including a bill in Black’s memory, to address concerns about past misconduct allegations within law enforcement.

The recent suspension of the entire police force in Ridgely has raised questions and skepticism among residents, who are eager for more information about the situation.
