RuPaul's Drag Race UK to feature Newcastle queen Choriza May who says 'that crown is mine'

Newcastle drag queen Choriza May says winning RuPaul's Drag Race UK "would mean the absolute world".

The 30-year-old will feature in the third series of the BBC's RuPaul's Drag Race UK, which is set to air in September.

During the contest, 12 of the nation's most talented queens compete to be crowned the UK's drag race superstar.

Each week, the performers face comedy, singing and dancing challenges and they battle to avoid elimination from the competition.

Choriza, who lives in Newcastle but is originally from Valencia, Spain, won Newcastle's Drag Idol in 2019.

Introducing herself, she told the BBC: "Hola, I'm Choriza May. I'm Spanish living in Newcastle, and so I am Newcastle's spiciest, meatiest and silliest sausage.

"As an immigrant queen, I'm someone with a slightly different background to the other queens in the competition, but my drag was born in the UK.

"There are millions of European immigrants in the UK, and I'm so happy to be representing them as drag queen of the immigrants.

"Apart from the weather, Valencia and Newcastle have a lot in common. In Spain people are tanned and in Newcastle everyone is tanned too! Ok, it’s fake, but it kind of feels the same.

"I'm passionate and unique, and I bring a bit of fresh air to the competition."

She says her motto is: "I'd rather be dead than basic."

She added: "I can sew, I can sing. I can't dance that much but I'll put my best foot forward.

"The thing I'm mostly scared of is someone from immigration watching the show and sending me back to my country.

"Winning Drag Race UK would mean the absolute world and I'm going to, because I'm passionate, I'm unique, I'm talented and I'm ambitious. That crown is mine. Because I'm the Spanish beauty and I'm not scared of taking risks."

The third series of RuPaul's Drag Race UK will be available to watch on BBC iPlayer this September. The exact air date will be announced in due course.
