RuPaul's Drag Race UK: Belfast queen Blu Hydrangea ready to slay

A Belfast drag queen is gearing up to 'sissy that walk' on the biggest runway of her drag career this Autumn.

Blu Hydrangea has announced that she is excited to be the first contestant from Northern Ireland to appear on the UK version of RuPaul's Drag Race.

She said: "It's official, I’m on Rupaul’s Drag Race UK Season 1! It’s been four years of hard work in the making, and months of keeping too many secrets.

"I’m so grateful to be the first person to represent Northern Ireland on the biggest drag stage in the world and I hope I do you all proud.

"A massive thank you to everyone for the support and anyone who has ever played a part on getting me to where I am today. I can’t wait to live my dream and share it with you all."

10 contestants were revealed on Wednesday and will battle it out in a range of challenges to become the UK's first ever Drag Race Superstar.

Among those handpicked by Mama Ru are Baga Chipz, Blu Hydrangea, Crystal, Cheryl Hole, Divina De Campo, Gothy Kendoll, Sum Ting Wong, Scaredy Kat, The Vivienne, Vinegar Strokes.

The 23-year-old Belfast queen said inspiration for her stage name came from her nanny.

She added: "My drag name comes from the Blue Hydrangea bush that is in my garden. My nanny told me that you have to plant it with a rusty nail so that it turns into a beautiful Blue Hydrangea.

"I love that story of something coming from like a rusty, dirty nail into something beautiful, which is kind of like me.

"It is hard to be a gay person in Belfast. My partner and I have been together for four and a half year and I would like to marry him but it's not even legal [in Northern Ireland].

"Blue Hydrangea is like a GCSE art project. She is the queen of the makeup brush and my strength lies in my mug.

"I know that Michelle and Ru are going to be looking for someone that is polished and put together and will wear that crown and look just gorgeous - and that's me.

"In Belfast the only way that you can make yourself known on the scene is competitions and I may have a crown or two. Hopefully I will walk away with the biggest crown of them all."
