'Running scared' - Newcastle United fans react to new European Super League proposal

It's deja vu for Newcastle United fans, as it's emerged that Premier League rivals Liverpool and Manchester United have not ended their push to significantly shake-up the picture of football.

After the controversial 'Project Big Picture' plans were rejected by the 20 shareholder clubs last week, it has now emerged that Liverpool and Manchester United in in talks to form a new European Premier League.

The proposal was see a new league consist of 18 selected clubs from England, Spain, Italy, France and Germany compete in home and away fixtures, then moving into a knockout format to decide the overall winner.

It would result in a major restructure of European football and can be seen as a fresh attempt to Americanise the sport, appealing to overseas audiences.

The issue is that fans seem to be entirely against it, even from those that would be involved in the league, and the fact that it would be an invite-only competition goes against the core of English football.

Among the many to speak out against the plans today were Newcastle supporters, with many pointing out that this is further evidence of the big-six wanting to control the sport.

References were made to the failed Saudi-led takeover, while other fans were confident that if the big six did leave the Premier League, they would be in the hunt for the title.

Other suggestions include the remaining 14 Premier League sides kicking the big six out and restructuring their own league, closely tied to the EFL and tightly controlled via salary caps.

Whatever the outcome, the new proposals are once again leaving a sour taste in the mouths of supporters who have had to endure numerous issues recently.

Still unable to attend matches, there has also been the extremely controversial introduction of pay-per-view fixtures in the Premier League.
